Statues: What's on the Box?

A project under development with the National Portrait Gallery in London, looking at providing interpretation for monuments in Westminster that tie in with the collections of the gallery. Many of these monuments deal with our colonial past, and this project is an opportunity to come to terms with this history, by engaging communities from former colonies, who now live in London, in the re-telling of that history. The National Portrait Gallery and these monuments form a single narrative of nationhood that we seek to relocate.

We believe the first task of any interpretative intervention is to explain why an artefact is worthy of attention. We are not interested in simply putting one piece of art beside another. We are interested in engaging in a dialogue with an audience in order to enrich their experience. We see this project as an opportunity to reclaim these anonymous statues for the people of London.
